Images of Resistance: An Archive in Action

project is in collaboration with our Presenting Partner: Myseum of Toronto. While this was initially meant to be a live art exhibition, due to COVID-19 this event was converted into a social media campaign and online forum that can be found on Myseum of Toronto’s website. 11 years ago the global Tamil diaspora community mobilized at a massive level to raise awareness on the brutal genocide against Tamils in Sri Lanka. In Canada, home to the largest community of Eelam Tamils outside of the homeland, the community organized numerous protests in 2008 and 2009 to highlight the ongoing atrocities and to call upon the Canadian government as well as the international community to intervene. These protests notably shaped and cultivated the political identity of many Tamils in the diaspora, particularly the youth. It ignited a new generation of Tamils to become more involved and politically active post-2009.
